The best resorts for cross-border skiing

A good place to start if you have the adventurous spirit required for cross-border skiing is Les Portes du Soleil which expand from Morzine in France across to Switzerland. The area is vast, spanning 650km according to On The Snow, and it comprises six different resorts for your choice. The most popular resorts in which to stay are those in Avoriaz and Morzine as they are bigger, busier and tend to have better conditions for snowsports.

Cross-border skiing can be thrilling, but it should only be done if you're a confident rider, it's not really excellent practice for novices. For an extra bit of excitement, choose your accommodation in the neo-traditional block of flats in Avoriaz, which perch on a cliff with a 1,800m drop.

Morzine magic boosted as new gym opens

Morzine is certainly a great place to visit this winter as the familiar superb slopes, magnificent scenery and great apres ski all offer perennial reasons to visit this fine resort.

That alone will be enough to get some making their ski and snowboot hire arrangements, but there are plenty of new additions to the resort.

We have already learned that there will be a new blue run for visitors to the Portes du Soleil to enjoy, with this being named Blue Velvet in a competition, appropriately enough as that was the name of the winning flick in the town's film festival in 1987.

Le Tour highlights Morzine's year-round appeal

There is no doubt that Morzine is a top-class winter resort, one that will be offering some wonderful trips for visitors over the next few months.

One man who can testify to its qualities is British Olympic snowboarder Dom Harrington. He recently told the Guardian that the Portes du Soleil area that includes Morzine is an ideal training ground, commenting: "Spread over 14 valleys between Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva, it's one of the world's largest ski areas and a great place to live.

"I chose Morzine because we used to train in the halfpipe there and I made friends and contacts who started businesses and made lives here."

Market Magic in Morzine

One of the great joys of going skiing in autumn is that there is enough snow for winter sports fans to head for the slopes, while at the same time offering an escape from excessive early Christmas hype.

In places where the season starts in October, it is possible for British winter sports fans to arrange their ski hire, head out there, enjoy a few days on the slopes and be back in time for the autumnal staple that is Bonfire Night.

Morzine hosts food-themed week

When it comes to the pleasures of holidaying, food is a true favourite. We bet you've had skiing trips and breaks away where what you ate really helped make the break brilliant.

Morzine has a food festival going on at the moment, in the shape of 'Morzine Aime Ses Saveurs'.

The event begins today, August 10th, with activities like a cheese tasting in the evening. It goes on until August 14th - this coming Friday - according to the Office de Tourisme de Morzine Avoriaz.
