Val d'Isere is one place in particular that's excellent for spring skiing conditions especially if you're an early riser in the morning. You can go skiing in Val d'Isere from now (27th April) until the first week of May, which is perfect if you're looking for a quick and late in the season weekend off to the mountains. There is a website that's wholly dedicated to the skiing conditions in the whole of the Val d'Isere resort, and it highlights where the places are going to be for you to get the best skiing conditions over your holiday.
Typically, the snow can feel quite hard in the morning in Val d'Isere during spring, so it's best to get up early, trek your way to the top of the piste and enjoy the view and landscape before you get going for the day. The conditions soften during the day under the bright sunny weather, meaning that as the hours go by the ground underfoot will yield more to your skis.
Before you head off you can look forward to meeting the chef who will be making your meal, the amazing Mickey Bourdillat in her kitchen at the Hotel Mont Blanc. This will be good if there are any people in your group who might have allergies, getting them straight to the chef is always better to avoid any miscommunication! After this you'll be off on your discovery tour, to see Chamonix a little differently than the average tourist. You'll be able to see some sights that not everybody will get to appreciate, plus capture it to take home for yourself.
This will make for an excellent adventure expedition during your skiing holiday, or else a lovely gift for a photographer friend. The activity itself takes around three to three and a half hours, depending on which route Teresa chooses for you.
We were telling you yesterday about how the Grand Motte Glacier is one of the best spots for skiing in late May, but there's plenty more besides for later season skiing. It's true that Tignes isn't open all throughout the year, as it once was, but you can still take advantage of the slopes from mid-June until August for summer sun. Some years - and this really depends on what the weather is like - you'll be able to take advantage of the pistes as late as September, but you really need to check with the resort for this information.
One of the best things about Zermatt - other than the fact you can ski there basically anytime you want - is that you can partake in cross-border skiing. As late as May, you'll be able to start in Austria and finish up in the Italian village of Cervinia, which is well known for its exciting skiing activities, including heliskiing. If you're going to take part in this activity, you should be aware that only those who are interested in and capable of extreme snowsports ought to apply for it. This is because heliskiing takes you far beyond the normal pistes, these are no black runs, the terrain you're going to be coming across is unchartered and completely untainted by other people and their skis or boards... have at it!
As we've mentioned before, Obergurgl is particularly well known for its freeriding, thanks to all the different off-piste areas that you can check out. However, if you're looking for something a bit easier going underfoot and you aren't looking for the dizzying heights of the off-piste, then we recommend that you try one of the guided Firn ski tours. These are lead by local guides and take a nice, light approach to skiing around the area, giving you plenty of breaks to make sure that you not only travel at a pace that is suitable, but that also allows you to take stock of the beautiful scenery around you. Cameras are welcome on this Firn ski tour and any questions you might have will be gladly answered by the knowledgeable local guides.
