Missing the slopes? Try summer skiing in Cervinia and Zermatt

The summer months may not seem like the right time of year to find cheap ski hire and head to the mountains, but just because the sun is shining doesn't mean you can't get out and enjoy that swishing sound of the snow beneath your feet. In fact, there are a number of locations in the Alps where skiers can go to enjoy year-round skiing - meaning you can keep up the practice and get your skiing fix, even in July.

Music in the mountains: the Les Arcs Classical Music Festival

Summer visitors to Les Arcs will have plenty of options to keep busy - from hiking through the mountains to sampling gastronomic delights. For those who love music, the Les Arcs Music Festival is an event that shouldn't be missed. Every summer, Bourg-Saint-Maurice welcomes thousands of spectators to the event and 2016 marks the 43rd annual festival. It runs from July 18th to August 3rd.

With more than 40 free concerts to choose from, visitors will be captivated by the beautiful music being created at an altitude of 1,800 metres. Many of the performances are scheduled to take place outdoors, which means the wonderful tunes will be set among the region's stunning scenery, bringing a new level of enjoyment to listeners. There will be a number of concerts specifically for younger audiences, ensuring there will be something for every member of the family.

Try trail running in Bella Plagne

Running is a popular form of exercise - and it's easy to see why. It's a great way to burn calories but doesn't require expensive gear or a gym membership and it's something that many people can start up at any time. You can run by yourself or in groups, and you can choose your own pace and set your own route. Of course, for most of us, going for a run means hitting the treadmill at the gym or jogging along city streets - so why not try something completely different with trail running in La Plagne?

Go hiking in Obergurgl-Hochgurgl

One of the best things to do when you're in Austria is to go to Obergurgl-Hochgurgl and get out to explore the scenery. The best way to do this is to take advantage of a hiking guide and get yourself up into the mountains. The view of the Gurgl's glacier-topped Alpine ridge is breathtaking and completely unique. It'll really appeal to the budding photographers in the family, as well as those who are nutty about nature. For those of you who are sporty, you'll really appreciate getting out into the fresh air, particularly as this area is usually better-known for being a ski haven.

Amateur cyclists take on the Etape du Tour ahead of the Tour de France

In fact, some 15,000 people are expected to descend upon Morzine on July 10th for a very special cycling event. Not all of those in attendance will be riding in the Etape du Tour, but cheering on those who are undertaking the challenge.
The reason that the Etape is so popular is that it is held over the same course used by professional cyclists when the Tour de France comes to town. Just two weeks after the Etape takes place, the likes of Mark Cavendish and Chris Froome will be completing the same course as the penultimate stage in the Tour.
