Battle session and off-piste safety in Chamonix

February is an excellent month for skiing, particularly in this area, as the various peaks are served well by the winter weather. Similarly, due to its proximity to Mont Blanc, ski enthusiasts can enjoy the slopes of the area almost all year long. The competitions that run through the Chamonix resort are a mixture of professional and amateur, and often they have open registration, so you can enter when you're in the area on holiday. One of these competitions is the Pass Park Battle session, which will take place on Saturday 13th February.

In teams of two, skiers and snowboarders will literally battle it out to show off their skills as they power down the mountain. Those who show off the best tricks and flair will be crowned the winners, but it's not an easy competition! Taking place between 2pm to 4pm, the Pass Park Battle Session is an event that requires a lot of endurance as riders will be faced with long runs and tricky jumps and rails. Not only this, but the contest takes the form of knockout rounds, which will continue until only one team is left.

Nordic ski race in Chamonix

However on Saturday 23rd January, Chamonix will play host to The Plum'Houches, otherwise known as the Nordic ski mountaineering race. This race now forms part of the Movement Vertical Challenge and it sees contestants tackling a circuit up the Prarion face of the mountain.

The competitors will begin bright and early, by meeting at 8.30am at the bottom of the Prarion to then start on the snow front for a 9.30am arrival time at the top of the mountain. Skiers will be departing in different groups every 10-15 seconds and will be timed individually to see who is the first to complete this stage of the competition.

Freeride World Tour, Chamonix

The Freeride World Tour has been making sports history since its inception nine years ago by bringing together top international, mixed gender, freeride skiers and snowboarders to compete at prestigious resorts all around the world. The men and women who take part in this tour are serious professionals and are all clamouring to be named World Champion of freeriding.

A lengthy process, the competition begins on Saturday 23rd January and finishes on Saturday 2nd April. However, it is Chamonix Freeride Mecca that will host the first French stage of the World Championships in the area of Brevent on Saturday 6th February.

Two of the best ski resorts in France to reach by car

One of the most tempting places to visit at the end of a long drive has to be Chamonix: regular skiers love it; its miles of on piste and off piste need little introduction. In terms of driving, Chamonix is just an eight-hour journey from Calais and it's extremely easy to reach by car.

The town of Chamonix has been described by many as sprawling, which makes bringing a car with you an excellent choice. Driving means that you will be able to enjoy even more choice of the practically limitless amount of runs in the resort. You can absolutely enjoy Chamonix without a car, but having the option of driving means that you can choose to explore different areas across your trip - there's no sense missing out if you don't have to!

Two of France's biggest lift-served vertical drops

Lift-served vertical drops are the best way to tackle vertical drops safely and you'll find over 50 areas claiming to have a minimum 1,700m drop.

However, these claims may not be what they seem as you might not be able to do the vertical in one go, there might be a cliff blocking your way or you might have to take a lift halfway down.

Thankfully there are at least two full vertical drops that you can tackle in France and the biggest one in Europe no less, is in the Vallee Blanche in Chamonix.

As a descent, the 2,755m run of the Vallee Blanche is something of an icon and is the longest descent in the world over the biggest lift-served vertical.
