Chamonix: A feast of events

This part of the French Alps is perhaps the most famous place in the world to go for a snowsports holiday and it's with good reason that people return to its pistes time and time again. Chamonix is basically the home of skiing and snowboarding events; during the winter season it's overrun with people who look to race against each other in one of its famed competitions. The sheer range of different events is a keen draw to those who love skiing and snowboarding, even families love coming here, as there are competitions in which children can compete, or team up with their parents. However, you don't have to feel like you're obligated to take part, as spectators are welcome to watch any of the sports events, due to the fact that they take place in outdoor spaces.

Naturally, it isn't all about extreme sports events that lovers of the X-games will flock to see, as the region is also famous for mountaineering. These events are a great way to improve your knowledge, or learn a new skill in a safe and technical environment. Each of these little expeditions is supervised by high mountain guides or FFCAM initiators, according to

Teresa's photo walks with a meal in Chamonix

Before you head off you can look forward to meeting the chef who will be making your meal, the amazing Mickey Bourdillat in her kitchen at the Hotel Mont Blanc. This will be good if there are any people in your group who might have allergies, getting them straight to the chef is always better to avoid any miscommunication! After this you'll be off on your discovery tour, to see Chamonix a little differently than the average tourist. You'll be able to see some sights that not everybody will get to appreciate, plus capture it to take home for yourself.

This will make for an excellent adventure expedition during your skiing holiday, or else a lovely gift for a photographer friend. The activity itself takes around three to three and a half hours, depending on which route Teresa chooses for you.

Run and Skate 2016 in Chamonix

This race combines two major disciplines of endurance sport, cross-country skiing and a running trail race. Taking place in Chamonix on 6th March, this race is not for the faint-hearted as the conditions will be tough, but that's what makes this race all the more rewarding. Having been in Chamonix for the past few seasons, this year, the event organisers have decided to shake up the conditions of the competition with new distances and a new race.

Among the different categories, there will be an individual event, which will see competitors battle against each other in a 14 km cross-country skiing race that also includes 11km of trail running. A similar distance and set up will be in place for a team race, with one participant taking on the cross-country skiing and the other team member doing the running. The new event for this year is the Run and Skate Discovery, which will see competitors enjoy 6 km of nordic skiing and finish with a 4.5 km run on the snow.

Kandahar Alpine Skiing World Cup 2016 in Chamonix

The competition returns to this alpine valley after a three-year hiatus, which has only served to build anticipation for this year's events and the entrants who will be pitted against each other to win prestigious prizes. As this is a world cup, the best skiers from all over the globe will be coming to Chamonix to compete on La Verte des Houches. It will take place on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th February, with an Alpine Combined event on the former day and a Downhill event on the latter.

Although both days are attended by all, the competition is a male-only event, each of whom are professionals skiers, who will be working hard to take the cup home at the end of the tournament. If you're attending the competition as a spectator there's plenty to see and do throughout this whole week, as the entrants will be arriving early, so you'll probably catch sight of them practising before the big day.

Not only this but there is a full programme of events throughout each day and night, including arts, torchlit descents down the pistes and events with L'Ecole du Ski Francais, one of the best skiing schools in Europe.

Battle session and off-piste safety in Chamonix

February is an excellent month for skiing, particularly in this area, as the various peaks are served well by the winter weather. Similarly, due to its proximity to Mont Blanc, ski enthusiasts can enjoy the slopes of the area almost all year long. The competitions that run through the Chamonix resort are a mixture of professional and amateur, and often they have open registration, so you can enter when you're in the area on holiday. One of these competitions is the Pass Park Battle session, which will take place on Saturday 13th February.

In teams of two, skiers and snowboarders will literally battle it out to show off their skills as they power down the mountain. Those who show off the best tricks and flair will be crowned the winners, but it's not an easy competition! Taking place between 2pm to 4pm, the Pass Park Battle Session is an event that requires a lot of endurance as riders will be faced with long runs and tricky jumps and rails. Not only this, but the contest takes the form of knockout rounds, which will continue until only one team is left.
