Departing from Obergurgl on August 4th, hundreds of hikers will face the elements to rally Vent, 16 kilometers away. Beyond the sports challenge it represents, the Glacier Flea Hike is also a good way to discover the Ötztal region and its magnificent nature.
Challenge yourself Situated at 1930 meters above sea level, Obergugl is the starting point of the Glacier Flea Hike’s 47th edition. On August 4th, experimented hikers will leave the city center between 6 and 8 am to connect Vent 16 kilometers away.
After a 3-kilometer ascension, you will reach the Küppelealm checkpoint (2303 m), offering a beautiful panorama of the valley. You will then head towards Ramolhaus’ traditional mountain inn (3006 m) where you will be served a typical Austrian snack. Once you have refueled your energy, set off for Ramoljoch (3200 m) and then Langeben (2583 m). After this last checkpoint, the finish line is only 4 kilometers away!
Beyond the surreal sceneries of this alpine walk, most hikers participate with the hope of winning a Gletscherfloh, a golden glacier flea badge that makes you part of a very exclusive club. If you are up for the challenge, simply stamp your card at each checkpoint and cross the finish line before 4 pm.
Good to know: The Glacier Flea Hike requires a good physical condition and adapted equipment. Be sure you are well prepared and equipped with robust hiking boots, warm jackets and weatherproof clothes!
Experience a typical Austrian party This alpine hike is very popular in Austria and makes for a good occasion to celebrate. In Vent, the party will start at 10 am with a concert at the fire station, followed by multiple activities throughout the day. In the afternoon, people regroup around the finish line and on the terraces to support the hikers. If you are a finisher, we suggest you celebrate your achievement the Austrian way: not sure beer will boost your recovery but it would be rude not to taste local specialties!
From Obergurgl to Vent, Tyrolean villages are a good option if you want to spend your summer holidays in a beautiful, quiet and authentic environment. The Ötztal region is the perfect fit if you love to go on a hike and want to discover the wild beauty of the Austrian Alps.
One great joy of winter sports is getting your skis or snowboard out on fresh, untouched snow - and if this is something you'd like to experience, then why not sign up for an early morning ski session on your next visit to Obergurgl?
Every Friday, skiers and snowboarders head out to enjoy the untouched snow in the First Line event presented by Audi. Experience the popular ski resort before anyone else does - with fresh snow, quiet pistes and the stillness that comes before the rest of the busy resort starts to wake up.
The excursions set out every Friday at 7:30 am, and participants can select one of two trails to enjoy their pure skiing fun - Festkogle or Hohe Mut.
You'll meet your guide at the Festkogl base station. Once the ski and snowboarding session is over, you will also be treated to a first-class breakfast at Hohe Mut Alm, where you can re-live your best moments while dining on delicious mountain cuisine and admiring the view.
Hohe Mut Alm is a traditional, cosy mountain hut with beautiful wooden detailing, homely Tyrolean parlours and a lovely terrace full of deck chairs where you can soak up the sun on a clear day. The restaurant takes pride in offering a high level of hospitality and excellent food made with fresh seasonal ingredients from local producers wherever possible. It's also a hotspot for activity throughout the year, such as concerts and international ski competitions, and it's a popular place for hosting weddings and other events.
If you want to sign up for a First Line excursion, advance booking is necessary - you can do this at most hotels in Obergurgl or the Otztal Tourism Office. There are only 50 spaces each week, so it's a good idea to reserve your spot as soon as possible. Bookings must be made by 5 pm the day before, and if the event is cancelled due to bad weather, you'll be informed personally.
If you're looking for a winter sport that lets you get out and enjoy the snow, explore the beautiful scenery and also get your heart pumping, then cross-country skiing is a great choice. This aerobic activity can really help you to burn calories and stay fit while experiencing the natural beauty of the Alps - and if you're visiting Obergurgl, there are plenty of scenic tracks for you to practice your cross-country skiing skills.
If you've never tried Nordic skiing before, the first thing you need to know is that there are two different versions of the sport:
●The classic style can be done on pistes that have been prepared with parallel tracks cut into the snow, as well as on fresh powder. With this technique, each ski is pushed forward from the other in a striding and gliding motion.
●Skate skiing should take place on a firm snow surface. Alternating skis are pushed away from each other at an angle, in a way that's similar to ice skating.
In Obergurgl, you'll find 12 kilometres of cross-country ski trails. This includes 3 km of practise tracks, and 1 km of that is illuminated with floodlights. For those new to the sport, classes are available with professional instructors, while intermediate and advanced skiers can also get classes to improve their skills and learn new techniques.
If you're looking for more places to go cross-country skiing, the Otztal Valley offers plenty of additional options. In fact, across the valley, you'll find more than 195 km of well-groomed Nordic skiing tracks.
One particularly popular place for the winter sport is at Langenfeld, where you'll find a wide-open basin that's ideal for endless Nordic loops. This is ideal if you're looking for stamina and endurance training.
Another option is the Untersolden Slope. This intermediate track leads along the valley bottom, through picturesque meadows and back to the starting point. It includes some slight ascents and descents and covers a distance of 4.3 km.
Winter in the Alps might not seem like the best time for a round of golf, but if you'd like to combine your love of snowsports with a bit of time on the links, then you might want to head to Hochgurgl.
That's because this Austrian resort boasts a state-of-the-art indoor golf facility, where visitors can enjoy golf at any time of year - even in winter when there's a significant amount of snow on the ground outside. The indoor golf park is the largest in Europe, spanning 700 metres squared and is situated in the four-star Hotel Riml in the Tyrolean Otzal Valley. With seven simulators and a 200 square metre putting green, it caters to both beginners and professionals.
Whether you want to get in a round of your favourite warm-weather activity, experience what it's like to swing a golf club at an altitude of 2,200 metres above sea level, or simply spend some time improving your swing, this indoor facility is ideal. Plus, since it's all in a climate-controlled and covered area, you'll always have the perfect training conditions.
In the simulators, you can choose tee-off spots from more than 50 of the most beautiful golf courses in the world, and you can also choose from made-to-measure training grounds designed to help you brush up your skills. Experts are also available to provide private lessons and individual advice to help you improve your stroke. You can also opt for a bit of video analysis, giving you personalised insight on how to improve your form.
And once you've finished your round of golf, the facility also includes the rustic Putt-in-Golf bar, where you can relax and enjoy your favourite tipple while discussing the game with friends and opponents. The windows in the bar offer some spectacular panoramas, with snow-capped peaks in the distance, reminding you that you are high up in the Alps, rather than the lower altitudes of Augusta or St Andrews.
