La Grave may be a small off-piste ski area in Alpe d'Huez, but it's also very popular among expert skiers thanks to its exhilarating mountain routes and uncrowded nature. But the future of the resort has been under threat for the past few years, as the old lift operator had decided not to renew its lease.
Recently, a crowd-funding campaign was started in a bid to keep the lift operating, but it has now been announced that SATA, the main lift operator in Alpe d'Huez, will be taking over the operation of La Grave's lifts from June.
The lift, which is a single telepherique that rises 7,000 vertical feet and provides access to some of the world's most renowned steep-skiing terrain, was built in 1987. The ski area quickly became popular among elite ski alpinists and was revered as an alternative version of Chamonix. For many years, it was known as Valley X as a way to maintain its exclusivity. The lift was owned by the town, but its operation was leased to Telepherique des Glaciers de la Meiji (TGM). That lease was set to expire in June, and TGM chose not to renew the lease due to liability issues and other concerns - and there were concerns that another operator might not be found.
Despite concerns that a corporate owner would take over and instigate unwanted changes, initial reactions to the announcement are positive. Mountain guide Pelle Lang has been skiing La Grave since 1989 and also owns a local lodge. He told Powder.com that the new lease provides security for the next 30 years.
Under the new lease, there are also plans for an extension of the lift and Mr Lang says this "will be good for La Grave".
SATA's proposals include a third-stage cable car to the top of the Dome de La Lauze, as well as an increase in operating times. It's expected these improvements will cost around 10 million euros (£8.48 million), and subsidies are being sought to help fund the project. The firm has also said it expects to keep lift prices close to the current 49 euros for a single day.
