If you enjoy watching winter sports competitions, Les Arcs has recently announced that it's planning something new this April.
According to the resort, it's going to be hosting France's first ever ski-then-mountain-bike-downhill relay race. Called the Ski2Bike race, this will be similar to competitions that have taken place elsewhere in the world. For example, there's the Ski-to-Sea race at Mount Baker in the north-west USA, while an annual event in New Zealand sees competitors tackle 1,600 metres of vertical, both above and below the snow line.
However, the event in Les Arcs (which will take place on April 22nd) will be the first to work as a relay, with different members of a team taking on various legs of the route. Organisers believe that the event is the ideal option for the late season because it mirrors the transition from winter to spring and the way sports preferences change as the weather warms up.
It's expected that around 150 teams - including male, female and mixed teams - will take part in the race. The competition will begin at around 5 pm, after the slopes close for the evening, and it will take place on a marked course with supervision from the ski patrols. Competitors will take off from the Col des Frettes, which can be accessed by the Arpette and Bois de l'Ours' chairlifts. The race begins with a descent over snow, at an altitude of 2,413 metres and passes through a snow park.
At Arc 1600, racers will switch to bikes and follow La 8, a famous mountain bike slope, down to the event village in Bourg St Maurice.
Of course, this isn't the only competition expected to take place in Les Arcs this year. For example, there's also the Star Trail running event, which will take place on March 17th. The race will see runners take off through fresh snow, over an 11 km route. The race is open to everyone, from beginners to experts, and begins at the Place Miravidi in Arc 1800 at 6 pm.
