Schruns-Tschagguns: skiing in the heart of Montafon

Schruns and Tschagguns form one of the main winter holiday bases in Austria's Montafon valley, in Vorarlberg. The two villages sit at roughly 650 to 700 metres and are framed by the Rätikon, Verwall and Silvretta mountain groups. Their valley-floor location combines the convenience of restaurants, shops and rail connections with quick access to several ski areas. From Schruns, the Hochjoch Bahn and Zamang Bahn lead directly into Silvretta Montafon; from Tschagguns, Latschau and the family-oriented Golm ski area are easy to reach.

Silvretta Montafon: 140 km of pistes and 35 lifts

The main alpine ski area is Silvretta Montafon, with 140 km of pistes and 35 lifts. It spreads across the Hochjoch, Grasjoch, Valisera and Nova sectors and offers a broad mix of terrain for intermediates, experts and families who are already comfortable on the mountain. The highest skiing reaches about 2,430 metres around Hochalpila, creating long descents, open high-alpine views and numerous options for sporty skiing.

For winter 2026/27, the overall season is scheduled from 27 November 2026 to 11 April 2027, although individual feeder lifts have different operating periods. From Schruns, Zamang Bahn is planned to run daily from 4 December to 4 April, while Hochjoch Bahn is scheduled daily from 19 December to 4 April. Actual operation always depends on snow, wind and technical conditions, so the live lift status remains important.

Direct access from Schruns: Hochjoch Bahn and Zamang Bahn

A major advantage of staying in Schruns is the ability to enter the ski area without a lengthy transfer. The valley station of the Hochjoch Bahn is only a short walk from the railway station and town centre. It climbs toward Kapell and provides quick access to the Hochjoch sector. Zamang Bahn, on Silvrettastrasse, is another convenient gateway and is scheduled to start uphill service at 8:00 during its main 2026/27 operating period.

From Hochjoch, skiers can continue toward Grasjoch and then into the linked terrain above St. Gallenkirch, Valisera and Nova. This network makes it possible to spend a full day travelling through the resort without returning to the valley. On windy days or at busy holiday periods, checking the status of key connections before moving far from Schruns is sensible.

Hochjoch Totale and challenging pistes

The Hochjoch Totale is one of the best-known descents associated with Schruns. It is described by the resort as Vorarlberg's longest valley run. Starting from the highest point of Silvretta Montafon at around 2,430 metres, it drops toward Schruns through more than 1,700 vertical metres. Snow texture can change considerably between the high mountain and the valley, adding variety as well as physical demand.

Strong skiers can also look for the five Black Scorpions pistes. These black runs include maximum gradients of up to 67 percent and are designed for confident technique rather than casual cruising. Easier terrain in the upper area gives children and improving skiers room to build confidence before moving onto longer routes around the mountain.

Golm from Tschagguns: 44 km of pistes

Tschagguns provides convenient access to Latschau, where the Golmerbahn serves the local mountain. Golm has 44 km of pistes and 9 lifts and is particularly well known as a family ski area. Visitors can find learning zones, easy family runs, red pistes and a World Cup descent for those looking for something steeper.

The longest possible descent at Golm is approximately 9.2 km with around 1,460 metres of vertical drop. Golm and Silvretta Montafon are separate ski areas, so it is important to check what each lift pass covers. Wider Montafon Brandnertal products can include several areas, while a more specific ticket may apply only to one mountain.

Snowpark, freeride and off-piste skiing

Silvretta Montafon includes a snowpark and action areas for skiers and snowboarders who want to work on jumps, rails and freestyle lines. The resort also promotes around 70 freeride routes. That variety does not mean that off-piste terrain is controlled in the same way as marked pistes.

Anyone leaving secured runs should check the avalanche bulletin, carry a transceiver, shovel and probe and know how to use them. A mountain guide can help select terrain that matches the group's ability and the day's conditions. Wind loading, fresh snowfall and temperature changes can alter snow stability quickly, even when visibility is good.

Cross-country skiing in Montafon

The wider Montafon valley offers about 90 km of groomed cross-country trails for classic and skating technique. There are options directly around Schruns and Tschagguns. The Mühlbachrunde in Schruns is a short easy loop, while the connecting trail from Tschagguns to Vandans is almost 6 km and follows the valley floor.

Lower trails depend more strongly on natural snowfall and temperature, so their current status should be checked before setting out. Higher-altitude trails elsewhere in Montafon can provide alternatives when valley conditions are limited. Nordic skiing is also a good way to add a quieter endurance day between alpine ski sessions.

Tobogganing, ice skating and winter walking

There is plenty to do away from alpine skiing. A long natural toboggan route runs from Lindauer Hütte through the Gauertal toward Latschau in Tschagguns. Reaching the hut involves a winter walk of several hours, so the outing requires suitable footwear, warm layers and enough daylight for both the ascent and descent.

Golm also has a 3 km natural toboggan run between Latschau and Vandans with 21 hairpin bends. At Aktivpark Montafon, between Schruns and Tschagguns, the large covered hall is turned into a winter ice-skating area of roughly 1,800 square metres. Prepared winter walking routes and snowshoe itineraries add more options for non-ski days.

Getting to Schruns-Tschagguns

By car, visitors travel through Bludenz and follow the L188 into the Montafon valley toward Schruns and Tschagguns. No high mountain pass is required to reach the villages, although winter tyres and appropriate equipment remain essential in snowy conditions. Parking near the lifts is useful for accommodation located away from the centres.

Rail access is particularly convenient. The Montafonerbahn runs from Bludenz directly to Schruns, and the Hochjoch Bahn is a short walk from the station. For winter-sports travel, qualifying multi-day Silvretta Montafon passes include the Bludenz-Schruns railway and Montafon regional buses until 19:30, subject to the conditions of the pass.
