Tignes, perfect for late-season freeriding

Almost as if it were created for the purpose of freeriding, Tignes is set in a giant bowl of snow, which means that there are always lots of powder stashes. For those who don't know, powder stashes mean that there's going to be lots of fresh terrain, perfect for you to perform your tricks, flicks and manoeuvres.

Of course, Tignes is home to the next stage of the SFR Freestyle Tour from Sunday 6th to Thursday 10th March, so its suitability for freeriding really speaks for itself. However, one thing that really makes it stand out is that the area is great for beginner freeriders. According to On The Snow, the best place for beginners is the Toviere area, which has some excellent spots between the pistes that lead up to Val Caret. As there are several resorts nearby, you can also head down the hill in the other direction to end up in Val d'Isere, which forms part of the Espace Killy alongside Tignes.

Disabled Alpine Skiing World Cup in Tignes

The sport is played all over the world and the different categories are downhill, slalom, giant slalom, super-G, super combined and team events. All of these events however are done by athletes of the highest level, who combine speed and agility when they're racing down slopes at 100km/h - maybe more.

With regards to the Disabled Alpine Skiing World Cup, this competition features athletes who have physical impairments including spinal injury, cerebral palsy, amputation, and blindness or visual impairment among many other conditions. Those who take part are placed in one of three categories, which are based on their functional abilities and it ensures fair competition across the tournament.

Choose skiing in Tignes to ring in the New Year

With that in mind, you're going to be hard pushed to find somewhere better to suit your needs than Tignes in France. Tignes is perfect for just about anyone, there is a suitable amount of nightlife, but it isn't known for being a wild party resort and it is particularly welcoming for families who have young children.

The resort itself is one of the highest in the whole of the French Alps and it consists of five villages, which all have their own distinctive charm and character. Much of their nighttime activity is focused on Val Claret and Le Lac, which On The Snow says are well integrated into the lift system. Almost all of the accommodation at the resort is ski-in ski-out, making it extremely convenient for you to go straight from the chalet to the slopes.

Tignes ready for start of season

As a popular summer resort thanks to its glacier skiing, it would be amiss to suggest that Tignes is quiet for much of the year. But after a little lull at the end of the summer season to draw breath, the resort is now ready for the start of the winter season.

October 3rd will see the famous French destination opening up, with the whirr of ski lifts, the pleasing whoosh of skis on the pistes and the bustle of the apres-ski nightlife in the evening all returning in style. Europe's winter ski season is about to get underway, and it is starting in Tignes.
