Early season skiing in Tignes

However, we can't forget that places like Tignes are still best known for their snow cover and this particular resort is a favourite with the professionals of the winter sports world. This isn't just because of the terrain that's available, or the fact that is has such a range of high-level competitions every year. Don't get us wrong, that stuff is still really important and is a big part of why Tignes is so popular, but we would hazard that the reason that professionals and novices alike take to the slopes is because it's the only French ski resort opening for almost the entire autumn season.

Porsche Savoie Cup in Tignes

There's going to be plenty for you to take part in and enjoy, as the event calendar includes an exhibition of cars and a non-timed tourist rally. This is going to be particularly good if you're just looking for something relaxing to do during the day, because it's free to watch and you can head along whenever you feel like it. An open-air all-day event, the Porsche Savoie Cup takes place between 24th and 26th June and this year marks the tenth edition of the event, making this year something of an anniversary special.

The North Face of Tignes

We were telling you yesterday about how the Grand Motte Glacier is one of the best spots for skiing in late May, but there's plenty more besides for later season skiing. It's true that Tignes isn't open all throughout the year, as it once was, but you can still take advantage of the slopes from mid-June until August for summer sun. Some years - and this really depends on what the weather is like - you'll be able to take advantage of the pistes as late as September, but you really need to check with the resort for this information.

The X-Speed Tour comes to Tignes

Earlier rounds of the competition are in Les Arcs 1800 and Alpe d'Huez on 5th and 6th of April respectively and later rounds will be in Morzine 9th and 10th, Val Thorens 12th and will finish where it started in Les Arcs again on 13th April.

This is quite a unique event as it's open to anyone over the age of five, but bear in mind that they'll need to have a good grasp of basic ski skills, meaning that anyone who doesn't have ESF level three expertise shouldn't really take part. This is more for the safety of themselves and everyone else who takes part. Parents don't need to worry about their children as the race takes place on a specific area of the Tignes resort, away from other skiers and snowboarders, so there won't be any risk of collisions.

Head to France for skiing in April

The Espace Killy ski area of France is one of the best areas to get in some late season, skiing as it stays open until early May. One of the resorts that you'll be looking for when you're booking your trip is Tignes, which is incidentally also very popular with the professionals of the snowsports world, so you might spot one of your idols practising for a competition when you're there. Tignes has high-altitude skiing on its Grande Motte glacier, which means it can stay open nine months of the year, according to

Val d'Isere, which is also a part of the Espace Killy, is also popular for everyone from families to freeriders thanks to its north-facing slopes, seeing it benefit from plenty of snow cover whilst being shielded from the heat of the sun. If you're looking for somewhere that has a huge amount of space then look no further than Val Thorens, which is actually Europe's major resort and is the place when you are practically guaranteed snow cover throughout the entire skiing season.
