What do you look for in a great ski resort? First, there needs to be great snow and runs that suit your skill levels, while wonderful accommodation and a good apres-ski atmosphere are also important. And who doesn't love a ski resort with a beautiful view?
After all, skiing is an outdoor activity that takes place in some of the world's most beautiful locations, and you might as well have something lovely to look at while you're swishing down the mountain or sitting on a chair lift. But where are the most picturesque ski destinations in the Alps? Here are four of our favourites:
●Zermatt, Switzerland - With its traditional wooden chalets and, some dating back hundreds of years, and horse-drawn carriages being a regular sight, Zermatt offers plenty of Alpine charm. There's also the fact that the Matterhorn stands tall over the town - it's hard to miss seeing this stunning mountain wherever you go, and it seems to always look spectacular.
●Chamonix, France - Nestled below Mont Blanc, Europe's highest summit, Chamonix boasts some lovely scenery, with views across the valley of Le Brevent and La Flegere. For the best views, head up the Aiguille du Midi - at an altitude of 3,842 metres, it offers a close-up vista of the Mont Blanc summit. Meanwhile, expert skiers might want to try the off-piste run through the Vallee Blanche to see the massive crevasses and towering glacial pinnacles.
●Alpbach, Austria - This gorgeous village is located on a sunny plateau, with Alpine summits providing a stunning backdrop. It's been called the most beautiful village in Austria for decades and one thing that certainly stands out is the uniformity of the wooden chalets, giving it a unique appearance. As for the skiing, it's a great choice for beginners, and the lovely tree-lined slopes are sure to provide some great opportunities for photos of your ski holiday.
●Megeve, France - This fashionable town was developed as a ski resort during the 1920s. Situated around a mediaeval town at the base of Mont Blanc, it offers cobbled streets and traditional farmhouses, as well as more modern, chic architecture.17/11/2016
