One of the main things that makes it a favourite with those who have younger children is that it's a very practical ski resort, meaning that it's easy for people with all levels of skill to get access to the slopes. Les Menuires is particularly special because it's actually eight small villages that are connected by eight ski runs, chair lifts and walking paths, making it one total resort overall. It has been a favourite place for families ever since it opened and is celebrating four decades of successful seasons. As On The Snow says, it mixes classical third generation ski resort architecture with more modern (but still classical style) alpine chalets and luxury residences. This is another main reason for its upshot in popularity, because it has so much high-quality accommodation the area tends to draw the eye of those who are affluent.
However, it's the fact that it's situated in the heart of the three valleys that makes it extra special - this is the largest ski area in the world and is hugely famous as a result.
When the people who run the competition say that it's for everyone, they mean it because you can take part if you're a professional, an amateur or even just a family who are enthusiastic about snowsports. The contest has been running for the past ten years and each year 1,500 skiers have been coming to discover the pistes of Les Trois Vallees. There's plenty to see as well because this is the world's largest ski area and is already the spiritual home of hundreds of skiers and snowboarders every winter season.
However, it's Sunday 3rd April that will host the competition that brings together skiers of all levels to improve their skills and have fun. This is the aim of the day, rather than having an emphasis on competing to have a great finish time or to win for the sake of winning. Instead, the Enduro is about getting as many skiers in one area to find out more about Les Trois Vallees ski area in a way that is original and shows that it is accessible for all. For this reason, this has become one of the biggest events of the season in Val Thorens and is eagerly attended by hundreds of people who not only ski, but love to spectate.
It's known for being a bit more quiet and sedate than some of its counterparts, which makes it perfect for families and those who aren't looking for the party element of a skiing holiday. It's also set in the Savoie area of the Alps, so people who are foodies and particularly keen on creamy cheeses will also appreciate this area. But, it's Les Menuires where you'll find the Yeti Trail Race, which sees people compete against each other in teams of two across 20 km of snow.
The event is a type of snow-covered obstacle course and includes tests in orientation skills, precision, strength, agility and endurance across that 20 km distance. It will be taking place on Sunday 13th March and anyone can register to take part in the fun. Of course, it is recommended that you have plenty of experience before you get there - as with all snowsports, you need to be trained so you don't cause an injury to yourself, or anyone else who is taking part.
