Located on the south face of the Grandes Rousses, the winter sports resort of Alpe d’Huez benefits from a rare microclimate. The area has been called “The Island in the Sunshine” due to its long hours of sunshine and is ideal for family or friends to enjoy a lively holiday togehter. With over 249km of marked slopes, Alpe d’Huez is renowned for having the world's longest slope (16km starting from the Sarenne the glacier), 2 snowparks, a slalom stadium along with many other varied activites. Despite being winter or summer : ice climbing, heliski, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, torchlit ski descents, quad, archery, and will never be short of activities. The cultural après-ski is very diverse, from the resort's famous international film to ice caves at 2700m. You may wish to visit the sheltering ice sculptures and stained glass windows from the Notre-Dame Snow Church created by the painter ARCABAS.

La Marmotte Grand Trophee in Alpe d'Huez

This is a week-long event that involves four races from 3rd July through to 10th July and the races run on the Sundays either end of the week and the Wednesday and Saturday inbetween times. For those who are interested in taking part in the action, cyclists can enter the full Trophee event, which is a 180 km race. Make no mistake, it's a gruelling task, but it's a challenge that is going to whet the appetites of those who love to get into their distance cycling gear. The full Trophee begins from Bourg D'Oisans to follow a course that finishes in Alpe d'Huez and the stops on the way include Col du Glandon, Col du Telegraphe and Col du Galibier. If nothing else, this is an excellent way for you to take in some of the extra sights that make the French Alps so beautiful.

Ski Open Coq d'Or with ESF in Alpe d'Huez

This competition is an opportunity to spot the best in young French ski talent, yes this one is just for the kids, but there's plenty of piste space for everyone throughout the resort area. The event will also make for excellent spectating as there will be some seriously high level young skiers taking part in these challenges. Open to everyone in France, you can expect to see both people from the mountains and cities around the area to be in attendance and most, if not all, of the competitors are members of the amazing ESF.

Quite often, the children at these events journey together as part of clubs and in fact more than 1,500 youngsters from as many clubs who belong as part of the French Ski Federation will be coming to the pistes of Alpe d'Huez. The challenges they will be facing include the Giant Slalom, the parallel slalom and Ski Cross. All of those who are to compete will face a mixture of excitement and nerves as the Ski Open Coq d'Or is known as the event for future French ski stars, so the pressure is really on.

Cristaux de L'Oisans

Everyone knows that the ski season is full of snowsports events and competitions, but it's usually the adults who get all the fun. This is just the opposite with Cristaux de L'Oisan; a children's race in Alpe d'Huez that could help kick-start some of the best skiers of the future.

This is an easy-going ski race that has been designed with children in mind, so there won't be any dangerous conditions or turns and you can be sure that your children will be totally safe when they take part. The aim of this event is to have a little competition with other kids, but mostly it's important to have fun. With the emphasis on having a good time, rather than winning, all entrants will win prizes or gifts.
