This is one of the most beautiful places to go for a holiday in Austria at any time of year, but it's really at its best during the peak seasons of summer and winter. What better way to enjoy some guaranteed sunshine than by running a half marathon, which starts at the St. Jakob church square? You'll be travelling on foot along a journey of 21.125 km, which will see an increase of 203 m of altitude throughout the course. For this reason, you need to make sure you do plenty of training in hilly areas or through other mountains to make sure that your head gets used to coping with the change in atmosphere. Although it might not be that noticeable when you're walking, it's a different story when you're running and likely to be dehydrated.
Due to the mountains and hills, resorts like Les Menuires lend themselves well to mountain biking and lots of different cycling events. Of course, the biggest event during the summer in this area of the country has to be the Tour de France, which has stages all throughout the Alps. However, if cycling isn't really your thing then you can always try your hand at some fly fishing through the various parts of La Vallee des Belleville. There are lots of great spots for this relaxing sport but the main area is The Doron, which encompasses 100 km of banks, 12 natural lakes and several smaller streams. The courses are run by Jean-Christophe - an expert fisherman - who will not only teach you but he'll also be providing the equipment you need and your fishing license for the course. You'll be travelling to and from the course with him.
It encompasses three days of mountain biking across 80 km of this area of the French Alps, which includes 7,000 m of downhill terrain and 1,000 m of uphill travel. Cyclists of all levels of ability are welcome to give this race a go and the route should take just one day, meaning you can enter on the Friday, Saturday or Sunday - it's completely up to you. If you feel up to it, you can do the course on all three days, but you'll need to have a serious level of fitness to be able to do that! There are refreshment points throughout the course to make sure you don't get dehydrated at any point and marshals are on hand to ensure that everything runs smoothly, so you don't have to worry about how safe taking part will be. All you really have to do is train and get ready to get seriously muddy.
If you're a cycling fanatic and you fancy taking a summer trip to the Alps then you're in luck, as there are dozens of biking events throughout many areas of France and the rest of the skiing regions. Often, these can be heavily attended by men, but this is where Morzine can help you out, as it is running a girl's-only nighttime ride event. So, if you're a girl who's looking for some expert advice, then you'll want to make sure you are going to the Girls Night Ride with Tahnee Seagrave this weekend, starting on 18th June. Those who are big cycling fans will know that Tahnee is the British MTB star in the downhill mountain biking world. Morznet even goes so far as to point out her championship credentials and a deserving one she is!
This is a week-long event that involves four races from 3rd July through to 10th July and the races run on the Sundays either end of the week and the Wednesday and Saturday inbetween times. For those who are interested in taking part in the action, cyclists can enter the full Trophee event, which is a 180 km race. Make no mistake, it's a gruelling task, but it's a challenge that is going to whet the appetites of those who love to get into their distance cycling gear. The full Trophee begins from Bourg D'Oisans to follow a course that finishes in Alpe d'Huez and the stops on the way include Col du Glandon, Col du Telegraphe and Col du Galibier. If nothing else, this is an excellent way for you to take in some of the extra sights that make the French Alps so beautiful.
